I am interested in what molecular mechanisms control regeneration, particularly focused on how changes in immune cells and signaling determine whether a wound will scar or regenerate.

There is broad diversity of regenerative ability across the animal kingdom with some animals able to regenerate almost every body part to those like humans that have a very limited regenerative capacity. I am interested in understanding what controls this difference in regenerative ability and applying that knowledge to improving human healing. In the Godwin group, we use the mouse digit tip model to explore how changing the cellular immune response and other molecular signals within a wound can change how well that wound regenerates.
