The Jackson Laboratory offers several hands-on workshops for those wishing to obtain training in surgical techniques for the laboratory mouse. 

  • Workshop on Surgical Techniques in the Laboratory Mouse: This four-day intensive workshop is for those wishing to obtain practical hands-on training in mouse surgical techniques.  In addition to surgical procedures, topics covered include mouse biomethods, anatomy, aseptic technique, suturing and microscope use.  Surgical techniques covered include castration, vasectomy, ovariectomy, ovarian transplantation, adrenalectomy, splenectomy, thymectomy, nephrectomy and jugular vein catheterization.  Participants completing this course will obtain valuable skills in multiple high-demand mouse surgical techniques.
  • Workshop on Stereotaxic Surgery in the Laboratory Mouse: This is a NEW one-of-a-kind workshop on mouse stereotaxic surgery.  Participants attending this course will learn how to: use different types of stereotaxic devices, read a Vernier scale, read a brain atlas and define bregma.  Hands-on laboratory sessions with your own stereotaxic equipment include animal positioning on the stereotaxic device, intracranial drilling, intracranial injections, CSF collection, brain cannulation into the lateral ventricle as well as bi-lateral brain cannulation and more. Participants should have basic surgery knowledge and the ability to work under a dissecting microscope.

These workshops may be used for continuing education units for AALAS re-certification.
